The core working principle of leather head: the synergistic effect of three physical characteristics

  1. Deformation buffering: making force transmission more stable
    When the club impacts the cue ball, the leather head will undergo slight deformation due to the impact force (soft leather head deformation is about 0.5-1mm, hard leather head deformation is about 0.1-0.3mm). This deformation is equivalent to a ‘cushion pad’, which can extend the contact time between the club and the cue ball (about 0.001-0.003 seconds) and reduce accuracy deviation caused by fluctuations in hitting force.
    For example, when a novice hits the ball, the force control is unstable, and the moderate deformation of the middle hard shell can “offset” some of the force deviation, making the cue ball closer to the aiming line; Professional players control the force and utilize the large deformation of the soft leather head to give the cue ball a stronger spin.
  2. Friction Transmission: The Key to Rotation
    The rotation of the cue ball (such as high pole, low pole, and stuffing) is essentially due to the frictional force between the skin and the surface of the cue ball. When the club deviates from the center of the cue ball and clicks on the ball, the rough surface of the leather head will generate “lateral friction” on the cue ball, driving it to rotate:
    Soft leather head: When deformed, it has a larger contact area with the mother ball and stronger friction, so the rotation effect of adding plugs, low rods, etc. is more obvious;
    Hard leather head: small and stable contact area, weak friction, limited rotation effect, but suitable for precise control of cue ball movement (such as small-scale movement in snooker).
  3. Energy loss: affects the transmission efficiency of hitting force
    The material and hardness of the leather head will affect the energy loss rate: a hard leather head has low energy loss (about 5% -8%) and is suitable for hitting on long tables (such as snooker in the middle bag and long distance), which can keep the cue ball with stronger forward force; The soft leather head has a higher energy loss (about 10% -15%), but retains more rotational energy, making it suitable for short platform positioning (such as the American 9-ball sticking ball).
